Meet our new intern: Thies Verbraak

Hey there everyone,

I am Thies Verbraak, currently in my third year of Healthcare Engineering at Zuyd University of Applied Science in Heerlen. Here in Maastricht, I got offered a 20-week internship at the DEXLab, where I'll be working as a developer to enhance my programming skills of Virtual Reality.

As a Healthcare Engineer, my knowledge spans a wide spectrum, ranging from Virtual Reality programming to PLC design and even a basic understanding of human anatomy. This diverse skill set has allowed me to specialize in a field of my choice, mine being Virtual Reality. Throughout my academic journey, I've developed a keen interest in the potential of VR in education and the possibilities it has to offer. So when DEXLab presented me with the opportunity to create a VR environment for students at Maastricht University, I couldn't resist seizing this chance.

Born and raised in Limburg alongside my three siblings, I embarked on my academic journey after graduating from VWO. My preference for hands-on working led me to opt for an HBO study at Zuyd Hogeschool instead of pursuing a research path at a university.

Being the youngest of four, I come from a large family of six and two dogs, with two sisters and a brother. Due to the size of mine, family is a large part of my life, and I make it a point to visit my parents during the weekends. With my siblings already having one or two kids of their own, it’s never dull whenever I visit.

In my spare time, I am a passionate handball player, occupying the position of a goalkeeper, a sport I've been practicing for 16 years at HV Gemini in Voerendaal. A bit accident-prone, I've had my fair share of injuries, including two concussions, two broken bones, and a metal plate in my arm. Recently, I've taken on the role of training and coaching a youth team, and I'm excited about the opportunity to pass on my knowledge and experience to the next generation.

So yeah, that’s me! I’m grateful for DEXLab for providing me with this opportunity and I’m excited to embark on this journey with them!
